Shredder hammers are the components that do the actual work in a scrap or auto shredder, and they fail in three distinct ways: impact fracture, wear on the striking face, and elongation of the eye. Each failure points at a different grade, and the fix for one commonly makes another worse, which is why the worn hammers coming out of your rotor are the best guide to what should go back in.
We cast hammers in high manganese steel for shock-dominated duty, in alloy grades where the face wears round, and in dual hardness construction where a hard face on a tough body gives both. In a horizontal shaft impact crusher the blow bar strikes the material directly, so product size, throughput and energy per tonne all run through it. Grade selection comes down to whether abrasion or impact is ending your bars: high chrome white iron holds an edge in hard, abrasive rock, manganese steel absorbs shock where tramp metal is routine, and martensitic grades sit deliberately between the two.
